CARING FOR YOUR PEARLS
Remember that pearls are produced by a living organism.
They are made from calcium carbonate crystals which react to
acid and they also contain protein and water, so they are subject
to dehydration and cracking. Therefore, it is advisable to moisten
them from time to time by soaking them in fresh water.
In addition, pearls are not as hard as precious stones, and
should be protected from direct contact with other jewelry and
other hard objects that could mar or scratch them.
Contact of pearls with acidic substances such as
dishwashing and laundry detergents, as well as hairsprays and
perfumes, should be avoided.
A practice should be made to rinse and dry your pearls
before putting them away, especialy in hot wheather.
Occasionally, after drying them, rub the pearls with a few drops of
olive oil placed on a chamois. The oil will restore the pearl's luster
and keep them from drying out.
